Phinehas' protection

Phinehas, son of Eleazar (Pi)
Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Teal • Ability: 12 / 8 • Class: Warrior • Special Ability: Protect this Hero from capture and conversion. Protect Heroes in your territory and set-aside area from discard abilities. • Play As: Protect this Hero from capture and convert abilities. Protect Heroes in your territory and set-aside area from discard abilities.

If I play a set-aside enhancement and set Phinehas aside along with a bunch of other heroes, does he protect himself and them while in set-aside?

no. Phineas's special ability is not activated unless he is in battle.

To clarify, Phinehas' ability must first activate in battle, then his protection will cover him and others in set-aside.

So if goes out on a rescue and plays a set-aside enhancement in battle is he protected?

I would say no because his ability deactivates as soon as he leaves battle.

Actually, yes. Special abilities remain active until the end of the phase
