This is a thread about inspiring discussions between hosts and players who have been ingenious at creating and organizing Redemption®-related activities that promote not only gaming but fun, fellowship, and faith as well.

Some memorable comments I have read and heard of are the following:
a.  MN hosts Bill V. and the Alstads have a yearly Redemption® Camp.  I encourage their playgroup to share details of their yearly project.
b.  MO host Twila S., for her playgroup, plans to "ask if anyone wanted to take a turn picking a favorite card doing a little research on it in their own Bible study between our game nights and then just take a few minutes to share what they learned."
c.  NY host Kitty J. has been letting her players use Bible verses on the cards to discuss extemporaneously during their Bible study sessions.
d. Game veteran Dan H. clearly repeats his great experiences at being able to answer Bible-based questions that none in his class could answer.

Great pick-up games (concept created by John M. and his CT/MA playgroup): http://www.angelfire.com/ok/furrow/pickupgames.html

I'm sure we have many more experiences and ideas to share with each other.

Let's make this thread a melting pot of ideas & constructive criticisms --- to spread Redemption® gaming as an adventure as well as a way to promote God's gifts.

Blessings!

"not criticisms"
Maybe constructive critism? Like ways to improve and things that dont seem good?

Kind of related but not - just a way to get new players:  I have doubles of some cards.  I'm going to start giving a card to each student when they belt test and pass.  I'm also going to pick a few cards with some of our schools Bible memory verses and if the student can remember the scripture and say it from memory they get that card as well.  It gives them a few cards to start with as to build interest and it's rewarding as well.  I'm excited because their next belt test is this Thursday and so they get their first one when passing.  I'll let you all know how it goes.  They are a little younger so I may have them start with an easier deck - what do you all think?  E/F/?? You don't have to post me here because it's really not topic related.  Sorry Reyzen, you can more it if it needs to be.   :D

I think this is a great idea.  Maybe an incentive to get people to come, just a little added bonus.

Here's the basic outline for our annual Redemption Mini-camp.

Recommended time needed: 4 days, about 3 hours give or take each day. We have traditionally done Mon-Thurs from 9 to 12 in the morning though kids can come earlier or stay later if they would like.

Resources per student: half starter deck, 1 each of all in print packs, snacks (optional), 60 pack of deck sleeves (optional)

Other resources: tables/chairs, "giveaway" common cards, extra rulebooks

Help needed: 1 experienced player per 4-5 students

Here is a basic schedule format for the mini-camps we have done:
9:00 Welcome/announcements/make sure students are each assigned to a table/camp helper

9:10 Hand out starter decks and Unlimited/Prophet packs (Day 1) pair up students to play each other with helpers going between games to explain things

9:50 Daily lesson

10:00 Short summary of best cards from packs of the day

10:10 Hand out packs (Day 2 Apostles/Patriarchs, Day 3 Kings/Angel Wars/Priests)

10:20 Help students add cards from their packs to their decks/help with trades between students

10:30 Pair up students for a second game

11:00 Quiz/other bible activity

11:15 Free time: students can work on decks, trade, play, etc

12:00 End of day

This is the basic schedule for days 1-3 and then we have held a small tournament on the last day (Type 1 2P only) usually with two divisions: completely new players & students who have played in the past/mini-camp helpers (optional)

I'm sure Bill will add some other details when he sees this post, but that is our mini-camp in brief.
Hope others will find this useful,

Justin

Daily lesson can be many different things. One year we had a Hero each day that we talked about and how God used them. This past summer we focused solely on Timothy and the idea of letting God use you even if you are a young person like Timothy. Bill could provide more details on this part since he has done more with writing basic curriculum for the mini-camp.

For cost, somewhere between $10 and $15 per student depending on a couple of factors (if you provide a small snack each day, whether or not your church provides some of the funds, if you want to give a pack of sleeves to each student, stuff like that.) For just the starter deck and packs its about $12 per student assuming you can get a wholesale discount from a distributor.

Here's a tidbit from one of our hosts (Excerpted)----

When I finally get everything organized and start hosting Tourneys, and giving away cards etc to kids/teenagers/adults.

1. There will also be contest for example bring me 5 cards in your current deck and quote the scriptures to me for 1 free pack.

2. Bring a friend along with a scripture on a card about bringing people to the word of God and receive a pack.

There are more, but don't want to spoil it all now lol. These not only excite those people into getting more from the game, but also God's word says it will not return void  ;D.

justin storm

P.S. Even if there is a lot of teenagers here I turn 28 tommorrow and understood every thing you talked about when I was 10 years old, its not a matter of age but maturity and spiritual growth. Just wish I had the vocabulary then or even now lol.

Hey Justin or Bill, do you need volunteers for this if it's going on this summer?  Because I might be interested.

we can always use additional help, paladin. it's at north heights lutheran church in arden hills, idk how far or close you are to there. oh, and bill usually gives helpers packs each day too!  ;D it's a lot of fun! We also do an optional summer sunday school for most of the summer, but justin and/or bill can explain more about how that runs....

Arden Hills is about 45 minutes away from me, so I could mot likely help out with some.  I'd definitely do it if I had a solar-powered car  :P

mnpaladin,

We can always use extra helpers. You could bring some other experienced players too as helpers. Helpers get a free pack everyday for helping amd get a chanch to get in some good pickup games plus an official tournament on the last day. You could bring some new players too it isn't limited to church members. The dates are June18-21.

Here is an idea for getting newspaper articles about your playgroup.

I suggest this not because it was a plan I came up with and executed with success, but because it accidentally happened, and others may find that the same thing happens with them.

A few months ago, I listed our monthly playgroup meetings in the events calendar of our local paper, the Roanoke Times.  The goal was to get the word out and hopefully find some more players who know about Redemption, but not about our meetings.  So far, I don't know of anyone who has visited our playgroup meeting because of the events calendar listing, but...

A couple of weeks ago, a community reporter called me up wanting to do an interview about our playgroup.  We talked on the phone for about a half hour about the playgroup and Redemption itself, and she asked me to take pictures from our next meeting and email them to her.

The results are in print today and online here

There are a significant number of typos and a few minor incorrect factual statements where the reporter misunderstood what I was saying, but all in all its a good article.  I'm eager to see how much interest this article generates at our next playgroup meeting.

Posting playgroup meetings in the event calendar of your local newspaper is a good idea anyway, but this is definitely a big bonus for us.  Let me know if you have had a similar experience.
