I'm doubting some of your transitions in that equality.  Let me try:

a = b
a^2 = ab
a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2
Factor difference of squares...
(a - b)(a + b) = b(a-b)
Divide by common denominator...
a + b = b
Substitute b for a, since a = b...
b + b = b
2b = b
2 = 1

It's not quite 2 = 0, but with a little manipulation, you could probably get there

There's the real problem.  The "common denominator" there is (a-b) which is 0 based on the given that a=b.  Therefore you are dividing by zero which is impossible.  Very nicely done though

Not quite.  Using FOIL method: 
(a + b)(a - b) = a^2  - ab + ab - b^2
Combine like terms...
